Police apprehend man for desecrating Ijebu Ode Shrine

        The Agemo Statue, Ijebu Ode

Jeremiah Nwoke, the man who allegedly damaged the Agemo statue at Itoro Roundabout, Ijebu Ode has been apprehended by the police and he is now in their custody.

The Agemo statue at Itoro Roundabout, Ijebu Ode Agemo is regarded as a supreme deity and a high god (Orisa) in Ijebu land. It was reportedly damaged on Saturday, 12th April 2025.

Nwoke was said to have desecrated the revered Agemo Shrine by severing the crown on the statue but which has now been recovered and in safe custody at Obalende Police Station.

Prompt response by the police at the scene calmed tension and prevented potential violent escalation by traditional worshippers. 

The suspect is presently undergoing psychological evaluation, as initial observations suggest signs of mental instability.

A release by the police assured that Ijebu Ode remains calm as residents were asked to go about their lawful duties as investigation into the incident continues.

Police also assured members of the public of their safety.
