Former President of Nigeria, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo is touched by the reality of the harsh economy presently plaguing the country and its consequences on the man on the street and has come out with a way to ameliorate the sufferings of the masses.
Speaking during the celebration of the 25th Owu Day celebration, at Oba Odeleye Park, Oke-Sokori, Abeokuta, Chief Obasanjo who is also the Balogun of Owu Kingdom noted that the economic situation in the country was tough on both the young and the old.
He therefore appealed to wealthy Nigerians to come to the aid of the down trodden, in order to reduce the effects of the current hardship on the masses.
Chief Obasanjo told the Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, who was also at the occasion to implement policies towards developing agriculture, trade and business in a bid to ensure food sufficiency in the state.
In his speech later, Prince Abiodun reiterated his government's determination to entrench people-friendly governance in the state in accord with the “Building Our Future Together” agenda, the mantra of his administration.
He disclosed that his administration would embrace all forms of collaborations from individuals, corporations and private sectors that engender economic progress, adding that the state government would support the agriculture cooperative initiative of former President Olusegun Obasanjo.
"This agriculture cooperative that Baba talked about is indeed a welcome development and this administration is throwing its full weight behind that project", he said.
Also at the occasion, the governor harped on his administration’s unwavering commitment to enhancing tourism in the state.
He said his government was dedicated to developing tourism, as part of the broader socio-cultural, infrastructural and grassroots development initiatives of his administration's "Ise ya" mantra.
The state’s helmsman added that culture and tradition not only defined the people, but also inspired the pursuit of progress within communities, noting that the festival, aside reminding the people of their rich cultural heritage, also underscores essential values like communal harmony and love.
" Our culture and tradition have not only defined us but have also inspired our pursuit of progress within our communities.
" Today, we celebrate not only our heritage, but also the significant strides we have made as a state", he said.
The governor called on the people of the state to support his administration in promoting peace and development, urging youths to desist from disruptive behaviour, especially during the forth-coming local government elections.
