A business concern, Zinc Industry, along Abeokuta-Sagamu Expressway has been ordered to halt production till further notice by the Ogun State Government.
The ‘stop work’ order was given by the State Environmental Protection Agency (OGEPA) to the company for allegedly violating multiple environmental regulations.
Special Adviser to the Governor on OGEPA, Dr. Oludare Kehinde made this known during an unscheduled visit to the industry yesterday.
Dr. Kehinde stated that the company failed to meet Environmental Impact Assessment, which he said, was a critical requirement for industrial operation, as well as operating in an unhealthy environment.
He also noted that the operational environments of the penalized company was hazardous to the health of its workers as they were not provided with Personal Protective Equipment.
“We have ordered the facility to cease operations immediately, while further investigations are being carried out to determine the extent of the violations to other regulations", said Dr. Kehinde.
The Special Adviser to the Ogun State Governor pointed out that: "the state government will not compromise on environmental regulations as it prioritises public safety and environmental protection".
He noted that OGEPA will continue its enforcement efforts, as it will continue to work in order to ensure that all industrial operations in the state meet environmental standards.
