One of the invading armed robbery gang, Adeniji Sakiru, 32 years old arrested by the police yesterday.
Armed robbers, numbering about eight, yesterday invaded Abeokuta phone market at Okelewo, shooting sporadically and looting various expensive phones amidst the pandemonium.
The robbers stormed the phone market, a.k.a 'TARMARC' at about 5:30 p.m to unleash their terror.
But the police were prompt to respond to the distress call of the merchants at the market as the DPO, Ibara Division, CSP Abayomi Adeniji quickly mobilized his anti robbery and surveillance teams in collaboration with men of Amotekun Corps and moved to the scene.
However, on sighting the policemen, the robbers opened fire to engage them in gun battle, but due to the superior fire power of the policemen, the hoodlums later fled.
They were hotly chased and with the assistance of the market men, one of the robbers later identified as Adeniji Sakiru 32 years old was apprehended.
Unfortunately, one Dayo Bankole, a trader in the market popularly known as 'Ebe', who was shot by the robbers later gave up the ghost while receiving treatment at General Hospital, Ijaye Abeokuta.
Recovered from the arrested robber are; one double barrel locally made gun and assorted Criminal charms.
According to SP Abimbola Oyeyemi, the Police Public Relations Officer, Ogun State, the outgoing Commissioner of Police now AIG, Frank Mba, has directed that the nabbed member of the robbery gang should be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Departments for discreet investigation.
AIG Mba has equally ordered a massive manhunt for the remaining members of the gang with the view to bring them to justice.
He therefore appealed to members of the public, especially hospitals, to inform the police if anybody with gunshot injury is seen in their area.
