Lagos State Taskforce has commenced a tactical operation to enforce the total ban on operators of commercial motorcyclists, aka Okada riders which Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu imposed since Monday.
The total ban which is expected to have taken an all pervading effect by June 1, this year was sequel to the mob killing of a Sound Engineer, David Imoh, who allegedly came out to settle a dispute between an Okada Rider and his two colleagues over N100 change in Lekki Phase 1 area of Lagos State.
According to the SA on Media to the state government, the State Taskforce began the tactical operation aimed at securing Lagos from the claws of murderous Okada riders, starting from the Lekki axis.
The jungle justice meted out to Imoh by lynching and burning of the innocent Man was said to alarmed and annoyed the governor who therefore promptly ordered the total ban of Okada in Lagos.
Governor Sanwo-Olu has banned operations of commercial motorcyclists, aka Okada riders in six local government areas in the state.
At a meeting with the state Commissioner of Police, Abiodun Alabi, DPOs, and Area Commanders yesterday, May 18, Governor Sanwo-Olu stated that the total ban will take effect June 1 in the following local government areas – Ikeja, Surulere, Eti-Osa, Lagos Mainland, Apapa, and Lagos Island.
He said local government areas that fail to abide by the ban will be punished.
Meanwhile, starting from the Lekki axis, the task force has already began the enforcement of the ban order of the governor.
A total number of 123 Okada riders have been reportedly arrested so far and the operation will continue across the state.
